In Spanish the word Palanca translates to "lever."
In Latin-American Catholic tradition, a palanca is seen as a spiritual lever and is given to express support and encouragement to new believers.
In the Catholic faith, palanca letters are written by the loved ones of a person who is retreating, or withdrawing, from ordinary activities for a period of time, such as a weekend to spend time in reflection and prayer to God.
A palanca letter gives support and guidance in the form of
a prayer, sacrifice and honest communication.
Write the name of the person who will receive the palanca letter at the top of page & include a salutation to the person, ex. Dear Child of God.
Write the introduction of your letter, explaining why this person is valuable to you. Emphasize something about them that demonstrates their goodness and how they have brought love and joy to their family, friends, or others.
Describe the special place in the family this young person holds, what you look for in him/her that no one else can give.
Describe specifically why you believe this young person is such a wonderful, unique creation of God. What is it about who they are that demonstrates their goodness?
Explain that you are happy the letter’s recipient is moving closer to God and is seeking God's love at a retreat. Reassure them that God will meet them right where they are.
Describe how proud you are of this young person, the effort, the service, prayer, concern, and care he/she has shown.
Tell how much you love him/her and how grateful you are for all he/she is to you and to others.
Encourage the person to come to you in times of pain, discouragement, and failure.
Express the hope that this young person will always strive to grow in his/her relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church.
Add an encouraging scripture from the Bible that reminds the letter’s recipient of God’s faithfulness in keeping his promises.
Let your letter’s recipient know you are praying for them. Tell them you will pray for their personal success and the success of their retreat.
Sign the letter only with the name you are known as to this person to keep it personable. Do not include your last name or address.
Remember that these are suggestions, not requirements, for writing your palanca.
The palanca can be as long or as short as you like.
What is important is that it is unique and sincere like the relationship you share with the recipient.
